Looking at Chinese Immigration to the United States
Chinese college students enrolling in United States colleges is at an all time high.
China has become the single greatest source of international students in the U.S.A. According to the Opendoors 2010 facts report on college demographics for international students, 127,628 students came from China to attend a U.S. college for the 2009/2010 school year.
The number of foreign students on F-1 visas in U.S. colleges and universities grew dramatically from 110,000 in 2001 to 524,000 in 2012. The sharpest increases occurred among students from emerging economies such as China and Saudi Arabia. Foreigners studying for bachelor’s and master’s degrees and English language training accounted for most of the overall growth.
The number of Chinese students studying in the United States continues to increase. According to the Minnesota Daily, U.S. universities enrolled nearly 100,000 Chinese students to their student population between 2009 and 2012, and Chinese students now comprise about a quarter of all foreign students in the United States.
The United States enrolled the highest number of international students in its history during the 2012-2013 school year, welcoming 819,644 undergraduate and graduate students to colleges and universities throughout the country, according to a report released today.
About 235,000 of the international students were from China, a 21 percent increase. A burgeoning middle class combined with a view that America has quality colleges and universities were factors cited as driving the demand. About one-third studied business and management once they arrived, the report said.
Universities across the United States and lawmakers have reacted accordingly. President Obama just a week ago announced his immigration reform plan, which is projected to “protect about 4.3 million unauthorized immigrants, including 4 million parents of legal residents” (Vox). Universities are increasingly accepting Chinese students and promoting English classes for Chinese immigrants to take. With an increase in Chinese students to universities comes an increase in Chinese students to Writing Centers as well.
